WHS SPRING SPORTS PREVIEWS: Girls tennis, girls golf, track and ...

GIRLS TENNIS

COACH: Scott Talbot (third season)

LAST YEAR: The Wizards went 9-1 in dual matches in the Class 4A Tri-Valley Conference. The won the Windsor Wizards Tournament and the Longmont Invitational, and placed fourth at the regional tournament. No. 1 singles player Jemal Yaryyeva lost in the state tournament's first round, 6-1, 6-3, to Mullen's Jessica Ingrum.

KEY PLAYERS: Hannah West, jr., singles; Kelsi Kruger, jr., singles; MacKenzie Wiedeman, jr., singles; Marcia Laslo, jr., singles; Melissa Minear, so., singles; Taylor Hilim, jr., doubles; Amanda Young, jr., doubles.

DID YOU KNOW? No. 1 singles player Jemal Yaryyeva was the first girls singles player to qualify for the state tournament in school history.

TALBOT'S COMMENTS: ?Four girls have a couple of years of varsity experience from the freshmen class we had a couple of years ago. It may be a little bit rougher this year than it's been in the past because we don't have the seniors that we've had in the past. It's a squad that looking the year ahead and next year, have a lot of opportunity to improve and really make some special strides toward state whether this year or next year. We've lost so much, but I know a lot of the other teams have also lost a lot. I think that this league in the past two years has been a Windsor and Eaton league, but going into it this year they've lost a lot of people and we've lost a lot. There are a couple of other schools that will have some players back that will challenge both of us for the top spot. Even though we've got a younger team, we've got players that have two years of varsity experience under their belt, so those players are going to be looked upon to guide the team.?

SEASON OUTLOOK: The Wizards lost six seniors from last year's team, and that's a big chunk out of the roster. They'll have no seniors on the varsity this season. Five girls are battling it out for the top three singles spots, with the other two girls adding skills on the doubles team. The Wizards will learn as they go, but they'll only get better as the season goes on.

FIRST MATCH: 3:30 p.m. Tuesday vs. Erie at Windsor High School

GIRLS GOLF

COACH: Whitney Davis (first season)

KEY GOLFERS: Hannah Peterson, sr.; Melissa Sahl, jr.; Emily Augustine, jr.; Samantha Black, so; Sylvia Renfroe, so.

DID YOU KNOW? Whitney Davis was a four-year Class 4A state qualifier for Mountain View High School in Loveland and won the 4A Northern Regional her senior year. After playing collegiate golf for Division II Chadron (Neb.) State her freshman year, Davis played her final three years at Division I University of Missouri-Kansas City. Davis, 25, has been a junior golf instructor in Fort Collins and Loveland since she was 16.

DAVIS' COMMENTS: ?I couldn't be more excited because the girls have all come out with a really great attitude, and I think that's going to make the difference. I see so much potential in every girl. I've got girls that I think we can get to the point where they're shooting in the 70s, and I have got girls that I think we're going to help them break 100 for the time. I'm here to help them reach what their individual goals are. Ultimately, in the next five years I'd like us to send a team to state. I definitely think we have the potential for some state qualifiers this year. The biggest thing I hope to offer them is bringing the positive mental attitude to the golf course. I like to emphasize the short game personally. I've got so much potential on my team from girls that are first-time players. I've seen great things on their swings. I've got some girls that are going to be phenomenal putters. They all have the pieces, and it's just a matter of putting the pieces together in a way that works for them on the golf course.?

SEASON OUTLOOK: Wizards coach Whitney Davis is very high on her team. With what Davis has to offer from a coaching standpoint and from her success as a player, the Wizards will get top-flight coaching and have the opportunity to shine under Davis.

BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK

COACH: Bryan Horn (first season)

KEY PERFORMERS: Justin Weinmeister, jr., long distance; Ben Leitz, jr., long distance; Jacob Molina, sr., short distance; Jordan Porterfield, jr., short distance; Joey O'Connor, sr., thrower; Becca Jones, sr., long distance; Kylee Bentz, so., multiple events; Dallas Hall, sr., multiple events.

DID YOU KNOW? Bryan Horn is in his first season as head track coach and is also a math teacher at the school. His wife, Susan, also teaches at the high school in the music department.

HORN'S COMMENTS: ?Our long distance runners will be able to give us a lot of points because of their experience and their talent. We have a great group of freshmen for both boys and girls who are all excited to get out and compete each week. (Joey) O'Connor's leadership in the throwing and on the whole team is going to be big for our younger athletes. We have a lot of kids who can score points in multiple events and that can get it done all over. Some of our state experience will help us get back to the state meet and hopefully qualify more kids. I hope we are a team this year and not just individuals competing. As much of an individual sport as track is, we need to be a team to be successful. Our inexperience could be a weakness just because we have so many freshmen out this year but they are all talented and can bring a lot to our team.?

SEASON OUTLOOK: The Wizards look to send even more athletes to state. Coach Horn says the boys have a good chance of being strong at state and getting stronger results than last year. As for the girls team, it will be more a building year, but with the leadership of the seniors, they can also make a run at state. The big meets for the Wizards will be the Runners Roost in Fort Collins on March 24 and the Windsor Wizard Invite on March 17.

FIRST MEET : Windsor Wizard Invite, March 17 at H.J. Dudley Field in Windsor.

BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING:

COACH: Kevin Scott (24th season)

LAST YEAR: The Wizards placed fifth at the Class 4A Northern League Championships as well as 17th at the 4A state meet. Many new school records were set including the 200-yard medley relay, 200 freestyle, diving, 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 400 free relay.

DID YOU KNOW? Once again, the boys swimming and diving team includes students from all groups within the high school. The team has members from the state marching band, football and wrestling teams as well as members of FFA and the soccer team.

KEY SWIMMERS: Andrew Scott, jr., 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke; Zeb Chadwick, jr., 400 freestyle relay and 500 freestyle; Ryan Kurtz, jr., 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay; Alex Hoffner-Heinike, sr., diving.

SCOTT'S COMMENTS: ?We have a lot of first-year swimmers as well as guys who have competed on the national stage. They have a great ability to work hard and they have lots of energy each week. The diversity of the group helps because of the successes that they had in other activities and they can carry that over into swimming. We don't really have a weakness because our guys can see what they need to work on and they will fix it themselves. They are dedicated in what they do. From the first week, no one has stopped coming to practices or changed their mind in competing so they are all dedicated to the team. Our four state returners are going to be strong leaders for the rest of the team because they know how hard it is to get to state and what it takes to place, so hopefully they can help the rest out and bring more guys with them to state.?

SEASON OUTLOOK: The Wizards look to improve with each meet and want to improve their times to get more qualified for state. Since moving from the Tri-Valley League to the Northern League two years ago, the Wizards have had a lot of close meets with Thompson Valley and Estes Park. The big meets for the Wizards this year is hopefully the state meet. Windsor will host four meets this year.

FIRST MEET: 4 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson Valley High School in Loveland
