On December 30th, the Tunisian Ministry of State Property announced that Canadian authorities have decided to cede the property of Ben Ali's son-in-law to the Tunisian government.
The value of the property (which includes a lavish villa - located in Westmount, Canada) and is estimated 1.338 billion Canadian Dollars.
The Canadian government initially intended to sell the property in an auction to pay off el-Matri's remaining debt. However, a newly ratified Canadian federal law prohibits the confiscation of money and property derived from corruption in third world countries or countries under (or previously under) a dictatorship.
The communiqu? released by the Ministry of State Property also reported that el-Matri's lawyer has been out of contact with Sakher el-Matri since he resettled in Dubai.
