Investing for Your Future, in a Nutshell ? Savings Habit | Savings Habit

Investing for Your Future, in a Nutshell??

Article by Linus Xavier

Today?s living expenses are rising through the roof, and as a result of that, less of your money is going to savings. Coupled with unemployment, this equation is turning out to be a disaster. But there is a light at the end of this tunnel. While times may be hard now, you still need to be thinking of your future. The chances of an economic turnaround by the time you reach your retirement age can be risky, and waiting until retirement to see what rates are is a bad idea. Already, at this time, the budget for a day?s worth in meals for a retired citizen is only about two dollars. Then, when you begin to factor in the amounts of daily expenses like home repair or car repair, stresses of yard repair and other maintenance, or even taxes at the end of the year, it starts becoming unimaginable. The dollar may depreciate even more in the future, leaving a gap between what you expected prices to be and what prices have actually become. The key is to start ahead. If you can start planning out your finances and investing for your future now, then the time to do it is now. There are several options for investments: your individual retirement plan or 401K plan, stocks and bonds, mutual funds, certificates or bank savings accounts, anything that will become an asset that can accrue interest and that will not take away from your average monthly net income. You want to have assets versus expenses. More time will save you from higher risks while investing in stocks. For example, expecting high returns from a stock comes with higher risk, this gives you less time to make up for a potentially large loss. It is best to play it safe by investing safely, and by putting your money where you know it will grow and not decline. You can do this by practicing efficient investment strategies, or by investing in stocks of companies who are growing. While their returns may not be growing, or prices rising, it is safe to bet that because the company is growing, their returns and prices will also, in time, rise. Investing in bonds is another safe way to let your money grow. If you buy them early enough to let them reach their maturity rate, and all else economically remaining satisfactory, this is a sure way to invest in your future, because the interest on your bond will accrue each year.Individual Retirement Plans (IRA) and 401k investment advice plans both have annual limits that restrict the amount you can invest towards the future. This is an important factor in why it is important to start your investments early. If the annual limit for investing in your account is two thousand dollars, and you start to invest 5 years before retirement, the maximum amount you can have in your account is only ten thousand dollars, versus forty thousand dollars had you started investing 20 years before you retired. An incentive of these plans is that you are not able to take out your money before a certain age without penalty. This can help to ensure you have the money at the time you need it most?when you no longer have a monthly income.Mutual funds and savings account through a bank that will accumulate interest throughout the years are both safer, more solid forms of investing for your future. Mutual funds provide a way to invest in several different stocks at once, which can generate a steady increase. No matter what option you choose, or what you can afford, the key to retirement is investing in your future early.

Europe bailout of Spain could cost $125 billion

MADRID (AP) ? Europe is to offer Spain a bailout package of up to ?100 billion ($125 billion) to help rescue the country's banks and keep the 17-country eurozone from breaking apart.

After months of fierce denials, Spain admitted it would tap the fund as it moved faster than expected to stem the economic crisis that has ravaged Europe for two years.

Spain becomes the fourth - and largest - European economy to ask for help and its admission of help comes after months of market concern about its ability to pay its way. In recent weeks investors have demanded higher and higher costs to lend to Spain, and it became clear it would be just too expensive for the country to borrow the money necessary for a bank rescue from the markets.

The three countries that have received rescues thus far ? Greece, Ireland and Portugal ? are fairly small, and many have worried that bailing out much-larger Spain could call the entire euro project into question. Cyprus, also a small economy, could also be forced to seek a bailout soon.

Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said Saturday the aid will go to the banking sector only and so would not come with new austerity conditions attached for the economy in general ? conditions that have been an integral part of previous bailouts to Portugal, Ireland and Greece.

A statement from the finance ministers of the 17 countries that use the euro explained that the money would be fed directly into a fund Spain set up to recapitalize its banks, but underscored that the Spanish government is ultimately responsible for the loan.

Still, that plan allows Spain to avoid making the onerous commitments that Greece, Ireland and Portugal were forced to when they sought their rescues. Instead, the eurogroup statement said that it expected Spain's banking sector to implement reforms and that Spain would be held to its previous commitments to reform its labor market and manage its deficit.

The exact figure of the bailout, however, has not yet been decided. De Guindos said the country is waiting until independent audits of the country's banking sector have been carried out before asking for a specific amount. The audits are expected June 21 at the latest.

De Guindos did say, however, that Spain would request enough money for recapitalization, plus a safety margin that will be "significant." The eurogroup statement said that meant the cost could reach ?100 billion. The aid package was announced after a video conference of euro zone finance ministers.

With markets in turmoil, de Guindos said the government's efforts to shore up the financial sector "must be completed with the necessary resources to finance the needs of recapitalization."

"Therefore, the Spanish government states its intention to request European financing for the recapitalization of banks that need it," the minister told a press conference after a videoconference with colleagues from the eurozone.

The Spanish acceptance of aid for its banks is a big embarrassment for Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who insisted just 10 days ago that the banking sector would not need a bailout. For him and officials of his government, that had become something of a mantra. He was elected in November and walked right into a hurricane.

International pressure on Spain to solve its financial problems has been growing in recent weeks. On Thursday ratings agency Fitch hit Spain with a three-notch downgrade of its credit rating. That left it two levels above junk status. Then on Friday, Moody's Investor Services warned it could downgrade Spain and other countries in the eurozone.

In the early hours of Saturday, the International Monetary Fund released a report estimating that Spanish banks need a recapitalization injection of at least ?40 billion ($50 billion) following a stress test it performed on the country's financial sector. That report came out three days ahead of schedule, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

U.S. President Barack Obama, facing re-election, enduring a weak economy and in need of strong trading partners, expressed concern late Friday over the European economic crisis.

U.S Treasury secretary Timothy Geithner welcomed Spain's decision and the offer of European support, describing them as "important for the health of Spain's economy and as concrete steps on the path to financial union, which is vital to the resilience of the euro area."

French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said the deal would "contribute to restoring confidence in the eurozone."

"The accord announced tonight speaks to a reinforced solidary among the countries of the eurozone and to their resolute desire to ensure its stability," he said in a statement.

Some of Spain's banks are struggling with by toxic real estate loans and assets. The Bank of Spain says they total around ?180 billion. Nationalized lender Bankia, SA, which has requested ?19 billion in aid, has ?32 billion in toxic assets. Around four other banks are considered prime candidates for bailouts. De Guindos said Saturday the sector is largely solid and the euro zone package will be funnel toward only about 30 percent of it.

Analyst Rafael Pampillon if IE Business School in Madrid said the bailout addressed the uncertainty the markets had felt about how Spain's debt-laden banking sector would recapitalize.

"This uncertainty, and hence the panic, will slowly dissipate from the markets," he said. Pampillon added that with polls forecasting a pro-Euro victory in Greek elections, markets would be further relieved because the austerity conditions imposed on Greece would most likely be fulfilled.

Moody's said Spain's banking problem is largely confined to that country and not likely to spill over to other eurozone nations, with the exception of Italy ? where the European Central Bank has already stepped in to buy government bonds as a way to help lower the country's borrowing costs.

Spain has been criticized for being too slow to set out a roadmap to resolve its problem. European business leaders and analysts have stressed that Spain must find a solution quickly so that it is not caught up in any market turmoil sparked by the Greek elections on June 17. There are concerns that anti-bailout left-wing party Syriza could become the largest party in the Greek parliament, putting the country's membership in the eurozone at risk.

But others said it's more important for Spain to correctly assess how to shore up its banking system than it is to hurry into a bailout ahead of the Greek elections.

If Spain doesn't get a request for outside help right the first time, "then you are in second bailout territory," said Mark Miller, an analyst with Capital Economics in London.

Working in Spain's favor is the fact that its public debt is actually quite low, at 68.5 percent of its gross domestic product at the end of 2011.

Its debt is predicted to hit 78 percent by the end of the year, but even that figure would be below the debt-to-GDP ratios of Europe's strongest economy, Germany, which is at 82 percent.

But Spain's in its second recession in three years, with unemployment at nearly 25 percent and little hope for improvement this year. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's government has imposed a wave of austerity measures since he took office in December that have raised taxes, made it cheaper to hire and fire workers and cut government funding for education and health care.

Ben Greenfield: Summer Shape-Up: 5 Tips to Stay Cool When Exercising in Heat

When you're shaping up for summer, one thing is guaranteed: heat.

And even if you don't plan on doing a triathlon or marathon in hot weather, high temperatures can make your workouts uncomfortable, inhibit performance, cause dehydration, and leave you feeling literally and figuratively under the weather.

Why does hot weather throw such a wrench into our workouts?

As soon as you start exercising in the heat, you force your body to circulate blood out to the skin, where it can be cooled. But this can suck precious, oxygen-delivering blood away from your working muscles, while also lowering the amount of blood your heart can pump with each beat. Add this to the fact that you're also losing blood volume via the fluid in your sweat, and what you have is increased demand on an already-stressed heart.

As your body's blood becomes a precious commodity and your heart is forced to work harder, your heart rate rises uncomfortably, your breathing becomes difficult, your blood pressure can drop, and your core temperature rises. Eventually, you will reach a temperature and blood pressure at which your brain sends a message to your body to stop, and at that point exercise goes from being uncomfortable and difficult, to simply impossible.

So how can you keep cool when you're exercising in the heat? Here are five tips:

1) Train for Higher Blood Volume
Also known as "heat acclimation," the process of training your body to have more blood involves a combination of consistent training and heat exposure. As summer rolls in, gradual exposure to exercising in hot conditions is one of the best ways to train your body to heat acclimation. Start with 10-20 minutes of jogging, bicycling, or brisk walking in the mid-morning or afternoon heat, and add just a few minutes each day you get used to the temperatures. When you combine this with drinking big gulps of water whenever you begin to get thirsty, your body will gradually increase blood volume to help you cool.

2) Sweat Better
Did you know that athletes produce more sweat? This is a cooling mechanism that they develop during heat exposure. When I'm preparing for a big race in hot weather, I visit the steam room or sauna and simply sit for 20-30 minutes while sweating profusely. Two to three weeks before a triathlon in hot weather, I'll increase my heat time to 45 minutes (just make sure you stay safe, and exit the sauna if you get light-headed or extremely uncomfortable). That way, when you have to exercise in the heat, your body will be used to it.

3) Lose Less Salt
Not only do you sweat more as you get fitter and increase your heat exposure, but you also lose fewer precious electrolytes in your sweat! Your body actually learns to hold on to the salts that you require for muscle contractions. When you become accustomed to hot exercise conditions, your body will automatically decrease the salt you produce in your sweat. So limit sodium intake during exercise, don't drink too many sports drinks (no matter what the commercials say), and as you learn to live and exercise with lower salt intake, your body will excrete less salt during exercise. A great resource to learn more about this concept is a new book by Tim Noakes, called Waterlogged.

4) Increase Salt Availability
There's one exception to the rule above. If you're planning on going out to exercise in the heat for a long time, such as competing in a hot weather marathon or triathlon, you may need to salt your food for a few days prior to your event, or like me, use some kind of a liquid mineral supplement a few times a day to ensure that your electrolyte levels are topped off. Especially if you're doing a good job not eating too much salt, and avoiding lots of high sodium processed and packaged foods, this extra salt during the week of a hot event can give your body extra sodium stores to rely on during exercise.

5) Keep Your Body Cool
There are many strategies you can implement to keep your core temperature cool during hot weather exercise. Here are five of the most effective:

  • Dump water on your head and face. The sensation of cold can also give you a refreshing feeling that can override the overheating message your body is sending to your brain. The colder the water, the better -- and if I am planning on a long run or bike ride in the heat, I'll even do a cold bath or cold shower beforehand so that I start with a lower temperature.
  • Wear clothing that breathes. A cotton t-shirt will not breathe well, and may make you feel even hotter. Exercise clothing that is designed for hot weather exercise is made of fabric that wicks away sweat and allows your skin to do a better job cooling your body. Look for clothing with synthetic fabrics specifically designed for exercise, such as polyesters, micro-fibers, and ultra-thin wool.
  • Drink. The best and easiest way to maintain blood volume that is necessary for body cooling is to drink water that is as cold as possible whenever you become thirsty. Do not wait until after you've become thirsty to drink, but also don't drink a bunch of water if you're not even thirsty. Simply listen to your body. If you have a long run planned, consider carrying a water bottle with you.
  • Use ice. Ice can help keep water cold during warm weather exercise, and can also be shoved down the front or back of your shirt to lower your temperature. In addition, you can chew on ice to cool your core, and if you really want to geek out on staying cool, you can wear specially designed arm-cooling sleeves, vests, and gloves!
  • Limit sun exposure. If you're exercising in the heat, try to stay under trees, near fences, behind buildings, and in as many shady spots as possible, since direct sun exposure can significantly affect your body temperature.

Ultimately, your body is able to adapt to hot conditions, but you need to give it gradual exposure to the heat, adequate water, and smart use of the strategies I described above for an added hot weather advantage.

Missed It? You can still participate in the 30-Day Summer Shape Up:

Survivor tells of horror in Syrian village

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Six hours after tanks and militiamen pulled out of Mazraat al-Qubeir, a Syrian farmer said he returned to find only charred bodies among the smoldering homes of his once-tranquil hamlet.

"There was smoke rising from the buildings and a horrible smell of human flesh burning," said a man who told how he had watched Syrian troops and "shabbiha" gunmen attack his village as he hid in his family olive grove.

"It was like a ghost town," he told Reuters by telephone, asking not to be named because he feared for his safety.

Until now a bloody 15-month-old revolt against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had barely touched Mazraat al-Qubeir, whose residents had taken little part in the uprising.

On Wednesday, the conflict came to them.

Army tanks surrounded and shelled the hamlet in the afternoon before rolling in, joined by pro-Assad shabbiha toughs on foot, armed with knives, guns and clubs.

"After the army fired on one area, security forces and shabbiha would go inside the houses. I heard gunshots inside three houses, then I saw them come out and burn them," the witness said.

"Most of the time I couldn't hear anything over the artillery fire ... By 8 p.m., they were finished."

Reuters could not immediately substantiate the man's story, but it chimed with several accounts by opposition activists who said they had talked to survivors of the attack.

United Nations monitors, who verified a massacre in which 108 people were killed in Houla on May 25, are investigating.

Their commander said his men had been turned away by troops at checkpoints and civilians on Thursday and U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said the monitors had even come under small-arms fire.

A pro-government Syrian television station said the U.N. monitors had eventually reached the village.

Ban described events there as "unspeakable barbarity".

Activists say at least 78 people were killed, most of them from one extended Sunni Muslim family living in a score of farm houses on the flat fertile land northwest of the city of Hama.

Rising sectarian tensions have sometimes led to bloodshed between rebellious Sunnis and minority Alawites who belong to the same Shi'ite Muslim offshoot as Assad himself.

Syrian authorities denied reports of the killings, which resembled accounts of the Houla massacre, saying security forces had confronted "terrorists" who killed nine women and children.

"PEACEFUL VILLAGERS"

Some activists said anti-Assad insurgents had been operating in areas near the village, home to about 150 people, who may have been targeted in revenge or as collective punishment.

But most said Mazraat al-Qubeir had never joined the revolt against four decades of Assad family rule. The hamlet lies about 20 miles northwest of Hama, where forces loyal to Assad's father crushed armed Islamist uprising 30 years ago, killing many thousands of people and razing whole districts.

"They were peaceful Syrians, neither with the regime nor against it," said one activist, who called himself Abu Ghazi. He named 54 people killed, all but a dozen of them from the al-Yateem family. Three were listed as three years old or younger.

The witness, who claimed he was a Yateem family member, said he had spoken to his brother on a cellphone as gunmen rampaged through the town.

"The last conversation we had, I told him I saw the forces coming to our house," he said.

"After the shabbiha and tanks left, the first thing I did was run to my house. It was burned. All seven people from my house were killed. I saw bodies on the stairs, the bathroom and bedroom. They were all burned."

One activist said Alawites living nearby were responsible.

"Many young men from the Alawite villages around al-Qabeer have died fighting for Assad against the rebels," said Manhal Abu Bakr. "They wanted revenge, and so they took it out on the nearest Sunni village."

BODIES IN BLANKETS

Some 24 victims have yet to be identified, Abu Ghazi said, some because their corpses were so badly burnt. He said many other bodies were dragged away to a nearby Alawite village.

Video footage released on Thursday showed the bodies of at least a dozen women and children, wrapped in colorful blankets and white burial shrouds, packed with frozen water bottles for want of a morgue or any other refrigeration.

Activists said they included a grandmother, her daughter and five grand-children killed in Mazraat al-Qubeir. Charred remains, possibly human body parts, were also visible.

"These are the children of the Mazraat al-Qubeir massacre... Look, you Arabs and Muslims - is this a terrorist?" asked the cameraman, focusing on one of the dead infants.

The killings came less than two weeks after the massacre in Houla, in which children accounted for nearly half the dead.

Assad has denounced the "abominable" Houla killings, saying it was inconceivable that Syrian soldiers could have done them.

James scores 45, sends East finals to Game 7

BOSTON (AP) ? LeBron James has walked off the court here too many times with nowhere to go except summer vacation.

The destination this time: Game 7 in Miami, with a spot in the NBA finals on the line.

James had 45 points and 15 rebounds, overwhelming the Boston Celtics and leading the Heat to a 98-79 victory Thursday night that forced a decisive game in the Eastern Conference finals.

After two days of questions about the Heat's future and his own history, James provided his response in resounding fashion in a building where Miami had lost 15 of its previous 16 games, and where his season had twice come to an end.

"In an environment like this, you want to have a big game," he said. "I wanted to be there for my teammates, no matter what was going on throughout the course of the game.

"This was a gut check for us, and it's good to see we were able to bounce back after that loss, after that Game 5 loss at home."

James shot 19 of 26 from the field and finished four points shy of his playoff career-high while playing 45 minutes, not sitting down until the victory was long secured.

"He was absolutely fearless tonight, and it was contagious," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "The way he approached the last 48 hours, and not only LeBron, but everybody else. Nobody likes getting dirt thrown on your face before you're even dead. He showed great resolve."

Dwyane Wade added 17 points for the Heat, who need a victory at home Saturday night to return to the NBA finals. And if James plays like this again, Miami should have no problem getting it.

"He played amazing. He was locked in from the beginning of the game like I've never seen him before," Wade said.

Rajon Rondo had 21 points and 10 assists for Boston. Kevin Garnett and Brandon Bass each scored 12 points, but Paul Pierce had only nine on 4-of-18 shooting.

"That was tough," Pierce said. "You got an opportunity to close out a series on your home floor. For us to come out and play the way we did, it was very tough. You got to take your hats off to them. They had a really great game plan. LeBron really got hot, played like the MVP tonight."

In the site of some of James' biggest disappointments, the only disappointed ones Thursday were the thousands of fans who hoped to see a celebration but instead filed out of the TD Garden midway through the fourth quarter, just before the league MVP called it a night.

"He was comfortable all night," Rondo said. "We didn't get into his air space."

Miami barely won Game 2 before dropping the next three games, but this one was never in doubt. James was a one-man force on what's supposed to be a Big Three, carrying the Heat in the first half while Wade made only 1 of 6 shots.

The Celtics were hoping to complete a comeback from a 2-0 deficit, as Oklahoma City did in the Western Conference, and advance to face the Thunder in the NBA finals. But they missed 13 of 14 3-point attempts and will have to win a second straight game in Miami to play for the title.

James' season was twice ended in Boston while playing for Cleveland, the Celtics emerging as the winner in a Pierce-James duel in Game 7 of the 2008 East semifinals, then beating the Cavs in Game 6 of the second round two years later.

That was James' last game with Cleveland, leaving that summer for Miami and the All-Star help that Wade and Chris Bosh could provide.

He needed none of it Thursday.

He had 30 points by halftime and spent the night silencing the Celtics crowd and perhaps some of the doubters he somehow still has. He set the tone for the game by making 6 of 7 shots and scoring 14 points in the first quarter, and he made sure the Heat were never challenged from there.

"I hope now you guys can stop talking about LeBron and he doesn't play in big games," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "He was pretty good tonight. So we can put that to bed and go play Game 7."

Meanwhile, Pierce, whose 3-pointer over James was the biggest basket of Boston's Game 5 victory, missed 13 of 16 shots through three quarters, including all six 3-point attempts.

The Heat obviously weren't deflated by that loss and came to fight, scoring 10 straight points to build a 10-point lead shortly after Mario Chalmers was called for a technical foul after getting mixed up with Ray Allen. They extended it to 12 points later in the period, taking a 26-16 lead into the second after shooting 58 percent in the period.

Wade finally got on the board with a jumper to open the second, but he seemed strangely passive even with Miami trying to save its season.

No matter. James didn't need the help.

He had consecutive baskets for a 15-point lead and came up with a basket every time the Celtics tried to get any rhythm. He soared high above the rim ? and any other player ? for a follow dunk after the Celtics had crept within eight in the final 2 minutes of the half. Miami led 55-42 at the break.

James made 12 of his first 13 shots before missing from the perimeter on his final attempt of the half.

Only Rondo kept it from being a blowout, scoring 19 points and adding five assists in the half. Relishing the challenge, he even emulated Garnett by doing a couple of knuckle pushups after being knocked to the court while drawing a foul, but he couldn't keep up with James and needed some help that never arrived.

The Celtics, trying desperately for one last championship before the expected breakup of their Big Three, hope this one doesn't get added to recent series losses against Orlando in 2009 and the Lakers in the NBA finals in 2010, when they lost Game 6s with chances to win series and then fell in Game 7.

James' first basket of the third quarter increased the lead to 17 points, and from there it was just a matter of coming up with another score any time the Celtics tried to make a run.

Boston never came close, and when a 3-pointer by Shane Battier made it 81-63 with 10:19 to play, Rivers spent part of a timeout standing alone on the court with his arms folded, leaving it to the players to try to come up with an answer that wasn't there.

Bosh entered with 5 ? minutes left in the first quarter of his second game back after missing nine with a lower abdominal strain, finishing with seven points and six rebounds.

Notes: James is the first player to score at least 25 points against the Celtics in eight consecutive postseason games since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from April 28, 1974, to May 27, 1984. ...The NBA playoff record for points in a half is 39, set by Golden State's Eric "Sleepy" Floyd on May 10, 1987, against the Lakers. Floyd finished with 51 points. ... The Heat switched to their red road jerseys after losing in the black here earlier in the series.

Digital Product Delivery - Internet Marketing Blog

Digital Product Delivery: Building A Legitimate Business Based Around An Online Product

One of the best internet businesses that you can build for yourself on a small budget can be centered around a digital product of some kind that can be downloaded directly in a web browser rather than having to ship a physical product. A digital product can be just as valuable as a physical product, and indeed it might benefit your customer tremendously to be able to download your product directly after purchasing it so that they can have immediate access, as opposed to waiting for it to be delivered. There are many examples of valuable digital products that can be offered such as eBooks, membership sites, or an audio or video training course.

Just because a product can be delivered to a customer digitally does not mean that it is less valuable, because many people today would prefer to be able to read an eBook on a variety of different devices such as their desktop computer and also their tablet computer. If you have created an audio product such as an interview with a prominent leader in your field that you are making available for download, any audio file can also be transferred to a variety of portable devices or burned on a CD for easy listening.

When many people get their start with internet marketing a popular method that many people use to start earning income online for the first time is affiliate marketing. This particular affiliate business model can allow to start earning money by promoting other people?s products and receiving a commission on any sales that you generate. But the next step beyond online affiliate marketing is to create your own product that you offer for sale, which gives you the benefit of being able to build your own email list of targeted subscribers as well as giving other people the option to promote your product as an affiliate.

One very important success factor for building a legitimate online business based around a digital product is to have a way to get in touch directly with your customers, which is usually accomplished by building an email list. Your digital product delivery method can either be redirecting your customer to a download page or sending them an email with the download link, but either way it is the ability to get in touch directly with your customers that can lead to multiple purchases in the future. If you are building your own online business based around a digital product, make sure that the product you are offering is genuinely valuable and worth more in value than the purchase price you are asking for.

Marketing Your Business On Instagram | Geek Business

Chances are that you?ve come across an Instagram photograph if you spend much time on Twitter or Facebook. Instagram is a service that allows users to add various filters to their photos for a vintage and cool effect; it can pretty much transform ugly photos into ones that are instantly hip and trendy. If you have a business with an online presence then you will definitely want to take advantage of Instagram in order to build a following and brand awareness. Here are a few ideas that you can use in order to market your business on this hot social media site.

Behind The Scene Shots

Instagram can be a great way for you to add a face behind the brand. It can also be a great way to introduce some of your staff members to the public. For example, if you own an auto dealership post a few shots of your sales team. Another idea is to post photos of company events such as birthdays or holiday parties. Are you involved with any community charities or sponsor any events? Why not share a few memorable shots of these occasions with your followers? This will bring a face to your company and will give potential customers a chance to get to know more about your company?s beliefs and values.

Everyone Loves A Good Contest

Contests on Instagram are a great way to gain followers and foster interaction with potential and existing customers. ?For example, you could have a contest asking followers to post photos of their own car or a very cool car they saw today. Or perhaps get them to vote on a particular topic and pick a random winner. They key is to be creative and to think outside the box.

Post Photos Of Your Product

Since Instagram is a visually driven medium you?ll want to post photos that are unique and compelling. Even though the filters do make everything look better that doesn?t mean that you should post up any old picture. Every image that you post is representative of your brand and the quality of your products so show off your best work. For example, if you own a car dealership with a large selection of autos why not post up a few fun and quirky photos of a few of your best-selling used cars? Like Twitter, Instagram allows you to post hashtags which makes it easier for other users to find your photos. In this case you may want to use #CARS or #NEW CARS as a hashtag.

Have you heard? Nearly 15 percent of work email is gossip

ScienceDaily (June 6, 2012) ? According to some estimates, the average corporate email user sends 112 emails every day. About one out of every seven of those messages, says a new study from Georgia Tech, can be called gossip.

Assistant Professor Eric Gilbert of the School of Interactive Computing examined hundreds of thousands of emails from the former Enron corporation and found that -- by the definition of "gossip" as messages that contain information about a person or persons not among the recipients -- 14.7 percent of the emails qualify as office scuttlebutt. What's more, Gilbert found that gossip is prevalent at all levels of the corporate hierarchy, though lower levels gossip the most.

"Gossip gets a bad rap," said Gilbert, an expert in social computing who runs the Comp.Social Lab at Georgia Tech. "When you say 'gossip,' most people immediately have a negative interpretation, but it's actually a very important form of communication. Even tiny bits of information, like 'Eric said he'd be late for this meeting,' add up; after just a few of those messages, you start to get an impression that Eric is a late person. Gossip is generally how we know what we know about each other, and for this study we viewed it simply as a means to share social information."

Still, another finding was that "negative" gossip, characterized through a Natural Language Text Processing analysis, was in fact 2.7 times more prevalent than positive gossip, though a significant portion of the messages were sentiment-neutral. The findings, according to Gilbert and Ph.D. student Tanushree Mitra, represent an important test of anthropological theories about gossip in what can reasonably be called the world's most popular electronic social medium: email.

"There is a rich literature in anthropology and sociology on the universality and utility of gossip among human social groups," Mitra said. "A recent survey of that literature summarized gossip as having four main purposes: information, entertainment, intimacy and influence. We found evidence of all those categories in the Enron emails, relating to both business and personal relationships."

The researchers divided the emails among seven layers of Enron hierarchy, from rank-and-file office employees all the way up to presidents and CEOs, and found gossip emails flowing within and among nearly every level, with the heaviest flow among the rank-and-file. However, the second heaviest flow within a single level occurred among Enron vice presidents and directors, and by a wide margin the strongest upward flow of gossip was from the vice presidents and directors up one level to presidents and CEOs. Vice presidents and directors also gossiped the most down the chain, with the heaviest downward flow originating from their level and ending up at the lowest, rank-and-file level.

Might these findings be unique to Enron? After all, actions leading to the energy-trading company's 2001 bankruptcy have earned it a notorious place in U.S. corporate history. Could such an environment lead to social behavior that is outside the norm?

"Enron certainly had what could be called a 'cowboy culture,' but I suspect the way they behaved internally to each other did not differ significantly from most other U.S. corporations," Gilbert said. "A lot of the emails we're looking at were from the rank-and-file, and it was the Enron CEOs -- a tiny fraction of its employee population -- who initiated and directed the actions that brought the company down. The average employee had no idea what was going on."

Indeed, the Enron corpus -- some 600,000 messages purchased following the company's bankruptcy and now made freely available for study -- represents the world's largest publicly accessible body of naturally occurring emails, and it has provided grist for numerous scientific and technical advances. For example, Gilbert said, email spam filters took a huge leap forward in efficiency in 2005 due largely to advancements made from analyzing the Enron corpus. And recently, Gilbert himself used Enron emails to discover that certain words and phrases in email strongly predict whether those messages are delivered up or down the corporate hierarchy. Still, he admitted to finding a slightly higher level of workplace gossip flowing around via email than he expected.

"I was a little surprised that it turned out to be almost 15 percent," Gilbert said. "But then again, gossip is something we all do in every aspect of our lives. I imagine corporate executives will probably take note of this -- and then send an email to Jennifer down the hall saying that Bob in purchasing gossips all the time."

Gilbert's and Mitra's findings are summarized in the paper "Have You Heard? How Gossip Flows Through Workplace Email," which Mitra is presenting June 6 at the 6th International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM '12), being held at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.

Wiz Khalifa promised that he was working on a "theatrical" set for his MTV Movie Awards performance on Sunday night (June 3), and the Taylor Gang star followed through on his word, bringing a party to the stage, while delivering his hit single"Work Hard, Play Hard."

The Pittsburgh rapper, who has become an international superstar after grinding for the past few years, decided to amp up the "play hard" section of his O.N.I.F.C. track, enlisting a group of party-ready fans to join him onstage. Wiz spit his bars on the mic (which was draped in an American flag) while surrounded by a group of revelers who were busy dancing with Solo cups in hand, against a graffiti'd backdrop.

As usual, Wiz looked calm, cool and on top of his fashion game, sporting a loose, screened white tank with ripped denim and a black fedora to top it off. He strutted his stuff past the party people and down the Movie Awards runway so he could get a little closer to the audience. He got energy levels up, chanting "work hard," "play hard" with some help from the audience, while the cameras cut to his fiancée Amber Rose looking on and to Ciara dancing in her seat, while toilet paper was strewn across the stage.

"My show is evolving and everything that I'm doing, so it's going to be more themed," Wiz told MTV News' Sway Calloway after rehearsing at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City before the show. "It's for the Movie [Awards], so it's going to be more theatrical. ... People are going to see that side of it as well as me performing and giving my energy."

Fans seemed to appreciate his theatrical vision, as they shared reactions on Twitter immediately following the performance. @nicoleporcaro wrote, "I've never witnessed a bad performance by wiz khalifa, ever," while @LickMyTaylors chimed in with: "Wiz Khalifa's performance at the MTVMA#AWESOME."
