CameraBag 1.93 (for iPhone)

CameraBag 1.93 (for iPhone) ($1.99) is largely the same as version 1.4 of the app, which I reviewed in 2008, with some modest enhancements. On the upside, it now has 16 filters (up from 10 in CameraBag 1.4), it?s more stable, supports higher-resolution images, and lets you e-mail images from within the app. The downsides are that it still doesn?t let you adjust the images, and there?s no integration with social media. CameraBag is a solid and fun app, if one that's behind the curve, expecially when compared with newcomers like Instagram (free, 3 stars).

Other photo apps, such as Camera Genius ($1.99, 3.5 stars) and Camera+ ($1.99, 3 stars) now offer not only creative filters but shooting aids like timers and burst mode, and the ability to tweak contrast, saturation. Most can also upload images to Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, or their own online galleries. But CameraBag still has its place, and will appeal to those who crave a simple way to fancy up their iPhone photos.

CameraBag lets you transform your photos to resemble vintage photographic styles simply by clicking on the appropriate filter. Photo buffs will find it does a creditable job of imitating historical photo techniques, and even those who just want to spruce up their iPhone images should enjoy experimenting with this app. If you want to edit your photos, or upload them to social media or photo-sharing sites, though, you?ll have to use other tools.

Operating CameraBag is simple. When you open the program, you see a dark screen with four icons at the bottom: snap a picture, email an image, save an image, or load an image from your iPhone's photo library. This is actually a plus over some of the newer apps, which only let you manipulate photos taken within the app. After you select or shoot a picture, the name of the last-used filter appears above the image, such as Colorcross or Infrared.

Vintage-Style Filters

By tapping on the filter name, you get a list of all 16 filters. Their one-word names, such as Plastic, Fisheye, and 1974, give a clue as to the filter's nature. Tapping a name selects the corresponding filter. Shoot a fresh picture or import one from the photos stored on your iPhone, and a thumbnail of the image with filter applied appears in the center of the screen. Swiping a finger across the screen advances to the next filter, so if you keep swiping, you can see the image with all of the effects applied in turn.

The information icon at the screen?s top-left lets you access a Photo Options menu lets you save the original photo (if you?re shooting images from within the app), use borders or cropping (which, when enabled, are automatically applied when appropriate to a particular filter), and turn filters off so they don?t appear when you're swiping through the thumbnails. You can see the provenance for Instagram in some of this.

The filters themselves cover a wide range of styles, from professional and specialized techniques (Magazine, Fisheye, Infrared) to consumer snapshots (1974, Instant) and toy cameras (Plastic). Every photo is an opportunity to experiment, and you can't be quite sure in advance which filters will work best on a particular image without trying each of them.

Helga and Lolo mimic the pictures taken with the Holga and Lomo hobbyist cameras with similar names. These cameras have cult followings both despite and because of their significant optical flaws, which can create unusual effects. The filter names are slight variations on the camera names, presumably to avoid infringing on the camera companies' trademarks.

Helga produces significant vignetting (a reduction in brightness at the edges of photos, particularly in the corners), while Lolo pictures appear oversaturated, often to the point of garishness. Helga generally didn't appeal to me. Lolo's high saturation, on the other hand, detracted from many indoor shots and portraits, but it nicely enhanced some outdoor scenes. It was particularly good at twilight shots, for which it really punched up the color and brightness of the sky and city lights. Both Helga and Lolo crop images to a square format, as the cameras they're modeled after do.

Cinema crops images to widescreen format. This is good if the images were taken in landscape orientation, but it lops off much of the top and bottom of portrait-mode images. Not the most exciting filter.

Colorcross provides vivid yet hazy, darkroom-style colors, while Plastic oversaturates colors, usually reds and yellows. Mono provides good, balanced black-and-white images while 1962 produces high-contrast monochrome images reminiscent of that era. Silver evokes the early days of photography, with a silvery blue (and sometimes yellow) tint. Magazine provides rich tones, while Italiano gives the images a mild, sepia tint and adds a trace of vignetting. Lightleak adds a streak of brightness across the image.

The 1974 effect reproduces the style of the day's photos by rendering color images with a slightly yellowish tinge that I generally found warm and cheery. And, as you'd expect, Fisheye distorts images as though they were shot through a fisheye lens, while Infrared mimics the result you'd get shooting through an infrared filter. I liked the ghostly, negative-like look of many of the Infrared images I created. Fisheye works best in shots of overarching branches, tall buildings from below, or funhouse portraits.

The Instant mode provides wide-bordered Polaroid-style snapshots?though you won't experience the anticipation of watching the image slowly materialize on film. Original lets you save the image unchanged, even if you just shot it from within CameraBag.

CameraBag lets you choose between 4 settings for image size (width of 600, 800, or 1,200 pixels, or full size). Even at full size, saving an image is relatively fast (about 4 seconds).

A Little Too Retro

Whether you're a photography buff or just want to spruce up your iPhone photos, you're sure to have fun producing many intriguing versions of your iPhone images with CameraBag. Experimenting with the app is an adventure: Before you apply a filter, you never know quite what you're going to get. Some of your variations created with these retro filters may even look better than your original.

But speaking of retro, CameraBag just hasn?t kept up with the times: Many iPhone photo apps are more full-featured. Camera Genius lets you upload images directly to Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter, while Camera+ includes those services while adding Picasa and Tumblr to the mix. Camera Genius offers a wider range of filters, including many vintage ones, while Camera+ provides 27 different effects. They let you fine-tune your images, as do both Photoshop Express and Editors? Choice Snapseed (4 stars, $4.99), which are focused on editing. With CameraBag, you get to choose between filters, but that?s about all.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand: It's Up To Women To Elect Pro-Choice Candidates In 2012

Last year, as a result of the 2010 midterm elections, the 112th Congress became the first in a generation to start out with fewer women in its ranks than the Congress before it. After decades of slow incremental growth in the number of women serving in Congress, last year we actually lost ground, dropping from 93 to 92 women (thankfully Kathy Hochul's victory last summer returned us to the previous level.)

But 2011 also saw the House of Representatives engage in an unprecedented assault on women's reproductive rights. Whether it was their passage of a bill to defund Planned Parenthood or their legislation that would allow hospitals receiving federal funds to refuse reproductive care to women even if their life was in danger, time and again, the House of Representatives proved it was hostile toward women's rights.

These things are not unrelated. The fact is, the more women we elect to office, the more women's voices are heard and the more the issues and values important to us become a priority. It's especially true on the issue of women's reproductive freedom. As we mark the 39th anniversary of Roe v Wade today, we must recommit ourselves to doing all we can to elect more pro-choice Democratic women to Congress in 2012.

Looking just at the Senate, we have an unprecedented 11 Democratic pro-choice women running, either as the incumbent (6) or challenger (5.) We also have a real opportunity to regain a pro-choice majority in the House of Representatives with Speaker Nancy Pelosi at the helm.

But the only way we're going to accomplish this is if women make their voices heard this year, vote for pro-choice candidates in November and bring a surge of women candidates into Congress. That's exactly why I started Off The Sidelines, to serve as a call to action for women to get involved in politics. Whether it's registering to vote, volunteering for a candidate that shares your values, posting on Facebook, tweeting or running for office yourself, there are so many ways women can get off the sidelines and ensure that women's values and priorities are represented.

Remember the Rosie the Riveter campaign? It inspired 6 million women to enter the workforce during World War II. We need a Rosie the Riveter for our generation. Imagine if 6 million women were to register to vote this year...imagine if 6 million more women vote this year than did four years ago. We would see a dramatic change in the representation of Congress and in the policies it implements.

The House of Representatives passed several anti-choice bills last year, but they went nowhere because we have a pro-choice majority in the US Senate and a champion in the White House. In 2012, it's going to be up to women to make sure the extremist anti-choice policies of the right continue to fail. It's going to be up to women to re-elect Barack Obama and elect a pro-choice Congress.

How are you planning to get off the sidelines and elect pro-choice candidates in 2012? Tell me in the comments and tweet me at @SenGillibrand with the hashtag #offthesidelines.

Obama: World united to address Iran nuclear threat (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama is praising the Iranian oil embargo imposed by European nations Monday, and says that the U.S. will keep applying new penalties as well.

The U.S. added new sanctions Monday on Bank Tejerat (tee-JER-'at), which is Iran's third-largest bank. Although the U.S. does almost no business with Iranian financial institutions, U.S. sanctions help choke off Iran's access to the international banking system. Iran needs access to that system to get paid for its oil.

Obama has also approved new sanctions on Iran's powerful central bank that take effect later this year.

Obama claims global unity in confronting Iran over its disputed nuclear program, although several of Iran's large trading partners have refused to apply sanctions.

The U.S. claims Iran is preparing to build a bomb; Iran denies it.

Five tips to maximize your mobile gaming experience - iPhone app ...

With thousands upon thousands of games in the iTunes App Store, there is no lack of great gameplay experiences. This is true whether you are a hardcore gamer or just looking to casually kill some time.

But the gaming experience on your iOS devices can be made a whole lot better with just a few simple tips. Maximizing battery life to keep your games going longer, providing yourself with the right hardware to make games more enjoyable, and taking advantage of all your iOS device has to offer is just a matter of knowing what?s available. Our five tips below will help you get the most out of gaming on your iPhone, iPad or iPad Touch.

1. Maximize your battery life

With a quick trip to your iPhone or iPad?s settings menu, you can make a few adjustments that will allow you to get maximum playtime out of your games in between phone recharges. Open the Settings app and find the option for brightness. There, you can adjust the brightness of your screen to a comfortable level; the lower the brightness, the more life you can get out of a single battery charge. Shutting down apps running in the background by double-clicking your device?s home button is also a good way to make sure you?re getting the most out of your battery. When you?re gaming on a battery budget, it?s best to keep your device from having to deal with any other functions or tasks so it can put all its power and battery life into playing.

2. Go for Wi-Fi

Another good way to save battery on your iPhone is to switch off your phone?s 3G data connectivity when you know you don?t need it. Games that support OpenFeint or Game Center will still function as normal in offline mode ? which means you can still snag achievements and store your scores locally ? without needing to waste battery or your data plan staying connected to the network. You?ll also get a much better experience in online and multiplayer games if you can find a Wi-Fi connection over a 3G one. Wi-Fi is ideal, but if you don?t have access to it and depending on the game, a 3G connection might be better than nothing.

3. Find some quality controls

Touchscreen controls can be a massive pain in some games. While plenty of App Store titles use the iPhone or iPad?s internal hardware like the accelerometer or gyroscope to make for some interesting motion-based controls, there are many more games that are much more traditional. They put virtual buttons on the screen, and those buttons control your characters? movements and abilities, just like any video game. Touchscreen controls are often fickle and tough to play with because of the lack of a tactile response that you would get from a physical button. But there are ways to add physical buttons to your play experience. We saw tons of interesting Bluetooth gamepads that can be added to iPhones at the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 in Las Vegas this month. As well, other alternatives like the iPad arcade cabinet iCade or the Fling Joystick line for the iPhone and iPadallow you to add real controls to your device. For many gamers, the right controls can mean becoming a better player.

4. Sound matters

Though the built-in speakers on the iPhone and iPad aren?t the greatest, sound design in iOS games can often be very, very good. Titles such as Dark Meadow, Dead Space and N.O.V.A. 2 use sound to make the experience more immersive, the game spookier, and the combat more intense. Some games have console video game-caliber audio design and create a stereo experience that will have you turning left and right in the game to look for the sources of sounds. Just understand that you lose that sense of depth and immersion when you don?t have the right equipment. The ear buds that come with your iPhone or iPad will do in a pinch, but it?s recommended you get ahold of a comfortable, better-quality pair of headphones to really allow games like Groove Coaster or the Tap Tap Revenge titles reach their full potential.

5. Make some friends

Game Center, OpenFeint and other services make it possible for iOS gamers to enjoy the kinds of online communities that make console games on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 so popular. You can actually make friends online to game with, and the iOS gaming experience is a lot better for it. A good way to start: Pick your favorite Game Center titles and try to place on their leaderboards. Cruise the boards for players near your rank and shoot them a message and a challenge, because just about every game is a lot more fun when you have a little competition. There are also games that support online cooperative play, titles that let you team up with a buddy and take on other players, and plenty of games in which you can just go straight-up head-to-head with a Wi-Fi or 3G connection. Another handy way to build your friends list is to use games that integrate with Facebook. Words With Friends can get you playing against your Facebook friends on your iPhone, which is a good jumping-off point for other multiplayer games, be they casual or hardcore.

Canada won't confirm expulsion of Russia diplomats (Reuters)

OTTAWA (Reuters) ? Ottawa on Friday declined to confirm media reports that it had expelled four Russian embassy staff after authorities in Canada arrested a Canadian navy intelligence officer and charged him with spying.

The Globe and Mail newspaper said two diplomats and two technical staff at the Russian embassy had been dropped from the official list of diplomatic, consular and foreign government representatives recognized by Ottawa.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper declined to comment. Authorities have not said who the intelligence officer was supposedly spying for.

A Russian embassy official denied the four had been expelled, telling the newspaper that they had left Ottawa after coming to the end of their postings.

This week Canadian authorities charged Navy Sub-Lieutenant Jeffrey Paul Delisle with giving "a foreign entity" secret information between July 6, 2007 and Jan 13, 2012. He was arrested in Halifax, Nova Scotia and will stay in jail until his next hearing on Jan 25.

Delisle is the first person charged under a new secrecy law enacted after the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Canada's Conservative government has had poor relations with Moscow since it took power in 2006, complaining about "increasingly aggressive Russian actions around the globe" and reconnaissance flights which approach Canadian airspace.

The two nations are jostling for influence in the mineral-rich Arctic region.

Rushdie cancels India visit after death threat warning (Reuters)

JAIPUR (Reuters) ? Salman Rushdie will not attend a literature festival in India after authorities warned the controversial author he was a potential target of assassins at the event, following threats of protests from Muslim groups at his planned appearance.

Opposition from some Indian Muslim groups erupted this month after Rushdie was invited to attend Asia's largest literature festival, and senior Muslim leaders called on the government to prevent the 65-year-old author from entering the country.

"I have now been informed by intelligence sources in Maharashtra and Rajasthan that paid assassins from the Mumbai underworld may be on their way to Jaipur to eliminate me," Rushdie said in a statement read out by the festival producer.

"While I have some doubts as to the accuracy of this intelligence, it would be irresponsible of me to come to the festival in such circumstances."

The British-Indian author, whose 1988 novel the Satantic Verses is banned in India, was due to speak on the first day of the five-day Jaipur Literature Festival but organizers removed his name from the schedule last week.

Rushdie would instead participate via a video-link, festival director William Dalrymple told Reuters Friday.

"This is the result of a tragic game of Chinese whispers. The reality of Rushdie's writings are completely different from the way they have been cartooned and caricatured," Dalrymple told reporters.

The festival's directors had previously asserted that the invitation to Rushdie still stood after rescheduling his planned appearance after Muslim leaders in Jaipur threatened to protest.

"The Muslims of Jaipur were planning a protest against Rushdie. Since he is not coming, we have cancelled it," Abdul Haq Shamshi, member of the Jaipur Jama Masjid committee told Reuters.

"If he is deceiving us, and if he comes, we will protest at a minute's notice," he said, adding that thousands of protesters would take to the streets if the author arrived in the city.

HEAVY POLICE PRESENCE

Earlier Friday, thousands of guests arrived for the first sessions of the festival, which aims to showcase the best of Indian, South Asian and international writing in one of the world's fastest-growing publishing markets.

Michael Ondaatje, author of The English Patient, was the main draw Friday morning, at a festival expected to draw around 70,000 visitors and world-famous names such as Oprah Winfrey, Tom Stoppard, Richard Dawkins and Ariel Dorfman.

Scores of police officers guarded the festival entrance on Friday morning, as visitors queued to pass through X-ray scanners, a new addition to the 2012 festival.

Some 560 officers were stationed in and around the festival site, Rajendra Jhala, Jaipur's deputy commissioner of police, told Reuters, adding that hundreds of others had been deployed at major road junctions and locations across the city.

"I guess this is what you get for inviting Salman Rushdie," remarked one delegate in the security queue.

The publication of Rushdie's Satanic Verses over 20 years ago sparked a wave of protests and death threats around the world after Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini claimed that the novel's portrayal of the prophet Mohammad insulted Islam.

The vice-chancellor of India's Darul Uloom Deoband seminary said last week that Rushdie should be banned from the country, accusing the author of the Booker Prize-winning Midnight's Children of offending Muslim sentiments.

"This festival at no point wants to offend any one religion, any one people. We stand by the freedom of expression," festival producer Sanjoy Roy told reporters.

Burnaby set to renew licence with community gardens group

The Burnaby and Region Allotment Gardens Association (BARAGA) is so successful, it has a waitlist of 95 Burnaby residents.

In no longer keeps a waitlist for non-Burnaby residents since it's unlikely any of those people would get a garden plot in the near future, according to a city staff report.

Burnaby council was expected to approve a renewal on Monday of the city's five-year licence agreement with the group for the 14 acres of city-owned land in the Big Bend area of the city. BARAGA, a non-profit volunteer group, manages 374 garden plots on the property. On average, only 10 to 15 plots each year are freed up to people on the waitlist.

BARAGA recently set aside a plot for the use of students from Maywood Community School, with all the produce grown to go to families from the school. That's in addition to about 2,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables grown at the community garden which are donated to the food bank each year.

?

?????

Millions of dollars in capital funding were to be considered by Burnaby council Monday, including $5.6 million for a pavement overlay program to restore deteriorated roadways. Of that, $2.5 million will be reimbursed by TransLink if the program goes ahead.

If approved, $200,000 could be spent on replacing LED traffic signal lights, $600,000 on replacement of about 150 of the most deteriorated streetlight poles, and $65,000 on traffic control upgrades such as crosswalk and turning lane upgrades, signage and other minor hardware replacement.

Council was also to consider approving the replacement of 14 km of watermains in the city, due to age and the need for increased capacity for firefighting and increase population, at a cost of $8 million.

Another $8 million in combined sewer separation and replacement of aging sewer lines is also being proposed.

?

?????

Buckingham elementary school is holding 50th anniversary celebrations on Sept. 29. If council approves a recommendation of its executive committee, the city's Festivals Burnaby program could be contributing a $3,000-grant to the event.

The one-day event will be open to the public. The school is unique in that many of its current students are grandchildren of the original students, or are children of parents who once attended, according to a committee report.

Tax return often an issue for White House hopefuls (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Mitt Romney's promise to release his 2011 tax return in April follows the practice of leading presidential candidates that began after Watergate. If history is any lesson, questions and criticism will continue long afterward.

For more than three decades, the major party nominees have released their income tax records. Some offered one year and others more than 10 years of returns. The same has been true for vice presidential candidates, except for Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas when he joined President Gerald Ford on the GOP ticket in 1976.

Former California Gov. Ronald Reagan broke his longstanding rule of keeping his personal finances private in July 1980 when he released his 23-page 1979 income tax return weeks before accepting the GOP nomination. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton weathered weeks of criticism in 2008 for not releasing tax returns showing family income after Bill Clinton left the presidency. She ultimately produced the records in April of that year after taking a pounding from her top party rival, Sen. Barack Obama.

Even after returns are released, controversies persist. Democratic Sen. John Kerry took heat in 2004 after releasing his returns because his wife, heiress to the Heinz Co. food fortune, initially refused to release hers, which were filed separately. Four years later, Republican Sen. John McCain faced similar criticism because his wife didn't release her separately filed returns, which reflected income from a Phoenix-based beer distributing company she inherited. She later released the two top summary pages of one year's return, the same that Kerry's wife had released.

Now it's Romney's turn. Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who released his own tax returns dating back to 1991, urged Romney during a debate Monday to release his. Romney, whose net worth is estimated at roughly $250 million, previously had resisted calls to release his tax returns. Anticipating a key question about his taxes, Romney disclosed Tuesday that he pays an effective federal tax rate of about 15 percent, still higher than the rate paid by many Americans.

Romney said in the debate that he will decide whether to release returns in the coming months.

"I hadn't planned on releasing tax records because the law requires us to release all of our assets, all the things we own. That I have already released," he said. Later, he added, "What's happened in history is people have released them in about April of the coming year and that's probably what I would do."

Romney's right. There is no law requiring presidential candidates to release personal tax information. Since 1978, however, they've had to disclose information about their income and some about their assets, like real estate holdings, investments and outside business interests. But those disclosures only show a range of values for assets, making it impossible to use those forms to identify a candidate's actual wealth.

He's also right that many leading candidates in recent history chose April to release their tax returns.

On Tuesday, Romney gave reporters in South Carolina more insight into his plans, saying he would release one year of his tax returns, not the six previous years that Obama released as a candidate in 2008 or even the two years that McCain released that year.

"People will want to see the most recent year," Romney said.

He said he's paid "closer to the 15 percent rate" in taxes because most of his income has come from investments and not ordinary wages, which have a top tax rate of 35 percent for those with the highest earned income.

When he ran in 2008 Romney refused to release his tax returns, and he previously had filed only state financial disclosures that described his assets in the most general terms.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia has said he will release his tax returns Thursday.

Even when tax returns are released, they offer only a narrow snapshot into a candidate's financial background. But some candidates in the past, like former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter in 1976, have offered more specific breakdowns of their financial worth.

Some of the bigger controversies over tax returns have belonged to vice presidential candidates. Geraldine Ferraro was a little known New York City congresswoman when the Democratic nominee, Sen. Walter Mondale, chose her as his running mate in 1984. The euphoria of that history-making selection of a woman for a major presidential ticket ended abruptly when Ferraro began battling criticism over her husband's refusal to release his separately filed tax returns. After they finally relented, she faced more controversy over accounting errors and other questions in the returns.

George H.W. Bush was Reagan's vice president at the time and became one of Ferraro's biggest critics on the issue, only to face his own controversy that year when he initially declined to release three years of returns. Bush argued he couldn't release them because he had turned his personal financial affairs over to a blind trust when he became vice president. But he ultimately released the returns weeks before the 1984 election.

Dick Cheney, George W. Bush's running mate in 2000, got blasted after releasing his returns for his financial ties to a Dallas-based oil company and for charitable giving that amounted to less than 1 percent of his income. After becoming Obama's running mate in 2008, Sen. Joe Biden faced similar criticism over his charitable giving once his tax returns became public.

In 2008, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's tax returns for two years triggered scrutiny because Palin, then McCain's running mate, did not list per diem payments the state made to her when she stayed in her own home. She later had to pay taxes on the payments.

Tommy Lee Jones to play General MacArthur in "Emperor" (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Tommy Lee Jones will play General Douglas MacArthur in "Emperor," a thriller/epic directed by Peter Webber ("Girl With a Pearl Earring").

Production on the Fellers Film and Krasnoff/ Foster Entertainment movie, which also stars Matthew Fox, is due to start later this month in New Zealand and Japan.

"Tommy will bring strength, intelligence, and gravitas to the portrayal of, a legendary American hero," producer Gary Foster ("Ghost Rider," "Daredevil") said in a statement.

"Emperor" is set in the days following Japan's surrender in World War II, when MacArthur effectively presided over the country as the supreme commander of the Allied forces. The film follows General Bonner Fellers (Fox), an expert on Japan, as he deliberates whether deposed Emperor Hirohito should be tried or face the death penalty. Concurrently, a romance ensues between Fellers and a Japanese exchange student.

Along with Foster, "Emperor" is produced by Yoko Narahashi ("The Last Samurai"), Eugene Nomura ("Tajomaru") and Russ Krasnoff ("The Soloist").

A theatrical release date has not yet been set for the film.

Android integration for car stereos and rear-view mirrors, hands-on (video)

CES may be over, but we've still got a few interesting gems to share from our week-long trip in Las Vegas. Far off the beaten path of glitzy booths and familiar brand names, we discovered a few companies that are looking to bring Android gadgetry into automobiles. One that exemplifies this nascent product realm is known as Rydeen. While many of its creations remain merely prototypes, the firm is close to completion of a double-DIN stereo head unit that runs Android 2.2. Then, imagine our surprise when we discovered a functional version of Froyo running from within a rear-view mirror. By the company's own admission, it has no interest to bring a stock Android experience to the reflective surface, but rather is treating this project as a learning experience. By 2013, it hopes to show a finalized mirror with a simplified interface more appropriate for drivers. We happened to grab a brief hands-on video with both models, along with the Android head unit. While we'd be hesitant to use any of the samples in their current state, each provides a fine glimpse into some of the consumer products that we may see in the desert next year.

Oil above $99 in Asia amid Middle East jitters (AP)

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia ? Oil prices edged above $99 a barrel in Asia on Monday amid concerns that tensions in the Middle East could hurt crude supply but gains were tempered by jitters over Europe's ratings downgrade.

Benchmark crude for February delivery was up 48 cents to $99.16 a barrel at late afternoon Kuala Lumpur time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 40 cents to settle at $98.70 in New York on Friday.

Natalie Robertson, commodities analyst with ANZ Banking Group in Melbourne, said fears of supply disruption amid ongoing tension over Iran's nuclear program and a crippling nationwide strike in Nigeria supported crude prices but trade was subdued by headwinds from the declining debt crisis in Europe.

"The oil market is a bit mixed at the moment given all the uncertainties coming out of the Middle East as well as escalating issues in Europe," she said.

Standard & Poor's downgraded the government debt of nine countries that use the euro including France, Austria, Italy and Spain, making it harder for the European Union to raise funds to overcome massive debts. Germany's rating remained at the coveted AAA level.

A recession appears likely in Europe, and huge spending cuts will likely reduce European energy demand this year.

Robertson said there was a downward bias for crude prices given soft demand and weak sentiment in Europe but forecast a floor of $95 a barrel before sentiment improves in the second half of the year.

In other energy trading, heating oil was up 0.1 cent to $3.06 per gallon and gasoline futures rose 3.1 cents to $2.76 per gallon. Natural gas fell 14.3 cents to $2.55 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Plantronics Clarity Fortissimo speakerphone hands-on (video)

Music aficionados will recognize the term "fortissimo." It's used to signify belting out the tunes as loud as humanly possible, which is exactly what Clarity is hoping to achieve with its speakerphone that uses the name. The Clarity Fortissimo is geared toward those who are mobility-challenged, offering a massively loud 95dB speaker, huge buttons, voice activation, Bluetooth and DECT connectivity, and a large touchscreen display. The Fortissimo offers Plantronics' Vocalyst technology, which has the ability to push emails, messages and even social network updates. It also has a dedicated button that automatically dials Clarity's support center, where a rep can then program the phone remotely for you. Expect to see the Fortissimo available this spring -- we were quoted April / May -- and will retail for $500. We have images and video after the break.

Brad Pitt Told He Couldn't Act After Auditioning for The Accused (omg!)

Brad Pitt Told He Couldn't Act After Auditioning for The Accused

He's one of the biggest, most respected actors there these days -- with a probable Oscar nomination for his role in Moneyball -- but Brad Pitt didn't exactly take Hollywood by storm when he arrived in the late 1980s.

PHOTOS: Brad's sexy movie looks over the years

The handsome 48-year-old graces the February cover of W Magazine, and reveals the first big-time role he auditioned for.

"My agent sent me out for two films," Angelina Jolie's man of nearly seven years says. "One of them was The Accused with Jodie Foster. I was so excited."

PHOTOS: LOL! Brad's 1989 cheesy horror movie

Foster, 49, won her first Best Actress Oscar in the harrowing 1988 drama in which she played the victim of gang rape.

Did then-fresh-faced Pitt try out for the part of a rapist? "Probably not," he muses. "With this face, I was probably up for the guy with the conscience."

PHOTOS: How Brad made ends meet before he made it big

Alas, the audition didn't go so well. "I called up afterward and asked, 'How did I do?'" the Tree of Life star recalls. "There were three seconds of silence and then: 'Have you ever thought about acting classes?'"

PHOTOS: 2012 horoscopes for Brad and Angie and other superstar couples

Pitt's far more confident about his acting prowess nowadays. "I die really well, by the way," he boasts to W. "It's one of my strong points. I just take a bullet well."

(AP) ? Masses of Tunisians marched in peaceful triumph Saturday to mark the one-year anniversary of the revolution that ended the dictatorship of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali ? and sparked uprisings around the Arab world.

Tunisia greeted the anniversary with prudent optimism, amid worries about high unemployment that cast a shadow over their pride at transforming the country.

Now a human rights activist is president, and a moderate Islamist jailed for years by the old regime is prime minister at the head of a diverse coalition, after the freest elections in Tunisia's history.

Tunisia's uprising began on Dec. 17, 2010, when a desperate fruit vendor set himself on fire, unleashing pent-up anger and frustration among his compatriots, who staged protests that spread nationwide. Within less than a month, longtime president Ben Ali was forced out of power, and he fled to Saudi Arabia on Jan. 14, 2011.

Boisterous marches Saturday reflected the country's new atmosphere.

On a crisp, sunny day in Tunisia's capital, Islamists shouted "Allahu Akbar," or "God is Great." Alongside them were leftists and nationalists celebrating freedom, and mourning the more than 200 people killed in the month-long uprising.

Leading Arab dignitaries joined Tunisia's leaders for anniversary ceremonies. They included Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika ? who faced down protests in his own country last year; the head of Libya's interim government, Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, who helped lead opposition to Moammar Gadhafi; and the emir of Qatar.

"The democratic process that has begun is now irreversible, after the dark period" of the past, President and former exiled activist Moncef Marzouki said.

Abdel-Jalil called the Tunisian revolution "a determining factor for the success of the uprising" in Libya.

The new leadership, to mark the anniversary, pardoned 9,000 convicts and converted the sentences of more than 100 prisoners from the death penalty to life in prison, the state news agency TAP reported.

As the country that started the Arab Spring, Tunisia appears to be the farthest along in its transformation. Political analysts warn, however, that further gains will not be easy or painless.

Heykel Mahfoudh, a law professor and adviser to the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces, said in an interview with The Associated Press that Tunisia is entering its second post-Ben Ali year "in a paradoxically necessary phase of turbulence."

Mahfoudh says he is "cautiously optimistic" for Tunisia's development, but remains worried about the country's economic and social situation. It's unclear, too, what the Islamists who won the elections will do with their power.

Unemployment has risen to almost 20 percent today from 13 percent a year ago, and economic growth has stagnated as investment dries up and tourism, once a pillar of Tunisia's economy, evaporates.

Tunisia under Ben Ali was renowned among European tourists for its sandy beaches and cosmopolitan ways. But for many of its people, Ben Ali's presidency was 23 years of suffocating one-party rule.

The revolution started when 26-year-old fruit-seller Mohammed Bouazizi set himself on fire in front of a town hall after he was publicly slapped and humiliated by a policewoman reprimanding him for selling his vegetables without a license. He suffered full-body burns, and died soon afterward. His act struck a chord in the impoverished interior of the country.

At first it was just local unrest, until clandestinely shot videos started popping up on Facebook and other social networking sites, inspiring youths across the country.

The focus of the protests soon moved to the capital Tunis as tens of thousands braved tear gas and battled police along the elegant, tree-lined boulevards.

And then on Jan. 14 it was over. After Ben Ali's army refused to shoot protesters and his security forces wavered, he fled to Saudi Arabia with his family.

Ben Ali's departure immediately reverberated across the Arab world. Within hours, protesters took to the streets in Cairo, and within weeks, longtime Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak had also been forced out of power.

Protests rose up, and were pushed down, in Bahrain. Opposition fighters took on Libya's Gadhafi and vanquished him after months of bloody civil war and with the help of NATO airstrikes.

Yemen's authoritarian president is supposed to step down as part of a U.S.-backed effort to end the country's political quagmire. And Syria is in the throes of an uprising that has seen more than 5,000 killed as protesters demand that President Bashar Assad step down.

Ben Ali has maintained a low profile since his ouster, but has been convicted in absentia for corruption and other crimes during his regime.

His Lebanese lawyer marked the anniversary by protesting the confiscation of Ben Ali's property and belongings by the new Tunisian authorities after his departure. Lawyer Akram Azoury said in a statement that the move violated Ben Ali's civil rights.

Google shares slide after Motorola earnings warning

SAN FRANCISCO | Mon Jan 9, 2012 2:19pm EST

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Shares of Google Inc fell nearly 4 percent on Monday, after Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc's warning of worse-than-expected financial results raised concerns about Google's pending acquisition of the smartphone maker.

The $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola, the largest in Google's history, is expected to close early this year.

Motorola's weak results "may suggest further deterioration in the business since the acquisition was announced, and they highlight the uphill battle for Motorola" in the competitive smartphone market, JP Morgan analyst Doug Anmuth wrote in a note to investors on Sunday.

The weak financial results could also serve as a reminder to investors about the operational challenges that Google will face as it enters the hardware market, and of "clouded optics surrounding an overall slower growth, lower margin Google once the deal closes," Anmuth wrote.

Google, the world's dominant Internet search engine, has become the No. 1 provider of smartphone software with its freely distributed Android operating System used by handset vendors including Samsung, HTC and Motorola.

By acquiring Motorola, Google will be able to develop its own line of smartphones with tightly integrated hardware and software, as it competes against iPhone-maker Apple Inc.

The acquisition of Motorola, which Google says will be run as a stand-alone business, will also give Google access to one of the largest patent libraries in the wireless industry.

On Friday, Motorola Mobility said its fourth-quarter financial results would miss Wall Street expectations due to tough competition and higher legal costs associated with intellectual property litigation.

Motorola said that fourth-quarter sales would total $3.4 billion, below analysts expectations of $3.88 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Motorola said it expects to report "modest profitability on a non-GAAP basis in the quarter. "Friday evening's pre-announcement underscored that for investors. Google has become a complex hardware/software media/tech global behemoth," Stifel Nicolaus analyst Jordan Rohan wrote in a note to investors on Monday.

"Over time, we believe this complexity will pressure Google's multiple, at least when compared with the multiple of companies with similar 20 percent plus growth in earnings," he wrote.

Shares of Google were down 3.8 percent at $625.38 in mid-day trading on Monday.

Last week, Google's stock reached a four-year high, breaching the $650 level for the first time since January 2008.

My Failed Attempt At Making An Appeal For The Wikimedia Foundation

brainwouldntdieI wanted to write an appeal for the Wikimedia foundation. I?m going to be completely honest: the only reason I wanted to write it was for completely self-promotional and ego purposes. On almost every Google search, Wikipedia is the #1 or #2 result. It?s almost like Google is just a middleman to Wikipedia. So I wanted you to search on ?head transplants? and then click on the Wikipedia page and see my face on the left hand side with something like, ?Click here to donate $5 to my favorite cause?.
